Vashti Bunyan

Introduced by some internet microcelebrity of niche underground cultures and underrated artists, I thought Vashti Bunyan in particular was somewhat interesting. Maybe you'd get the impression of her being this sort of hippie indie embracer, and you're not that wrong, but she has her charm.

Vashti Bunyan has this very interesting vocal in which you can pick up this sort of motherly impression. I'm not sure if you hear it too but in a way it sounds tender and comforting. I'd go on to say it's mystical but I can't exactly pinpoint what about her voice sounds so. Maybe it's her fantasy-like lyrics, or the lack of information (or my ignorance thereof) of her.

She has this surprisingly consistent style throughout the years, but different to her previous albums that feature less instrumentals, the more recent ones are rather festive (unless I'm wrong because truth be told I haven't fully listened to her entire discography, my bad). She has this storytelling through her lyrics that are very concise but well written and understandable, you can comprehend what they're trying convey without having to delve too deep into it.

Unfornately the audience of her songs have this really strange misunderstanding, or ignorance, not sure. I understand they're trying to show that they love her songs but they often get the period of her release wrong, consequently equating her to artists of a whole different genre and misinterpreting her songs as something else entirely. Maybe a way to relate to her songs, maybe afterall it doesn't matter what something holds beyond what it means to someone else, I'm not sure.
