Mitski
Shoutout to Mitski, gotta be one of my favourite artsists. One of the modern leading artists with her unapologetically unique style and highly cofessional lyrics.
She has the strangest energy, with some seemingly avantgarde live performances and peculiar music videos, but you can notice how sweet of a person she is in her live interviews. Or not, I'm not sure. Any public figure practices diplomacy so I think it's best to take it in the lightest light.
As I have said before, her songs are eeriely confessional and honest as if she were confiding in someone. Other times, it's as if she's accurately but unsettlingly portraying someone else she has heard of, be it to her view or some someone else's I'm not sure. Her ideas hauntingly contemplative and at times reactionary, I can see why she attracts a certain kind of demography.
Style-wise, I respect her artistry and her craftsmanship. Her very unique non-conforming and adaptive style lands her a place deserving of name and that's exactly what happened with the exposure of Tiktok. She jumps from style to style with almost every album and I think that is something to say about her experimentalism. Though I'm not sure, it started becoming more consistent from the 4th album and onwards but I haven't studied much of it.
Her approach to music, in which interview she mentioned I forgot, is something I often think about. Melody as the main element of a song, should be able to stand alone as it is. That probably explains the intimacy of hearing her vocals in its rawest form, without any elaborate intstrumentals or heavy distortion. Harmony should serve as an auxillary, an accompaniment to an already existing melody, probably explaining her bold chord choices and intrumentals, and her baren performance as something genuine and unrestrained.
Here is a good demonstration of her concept, performed by the artist herself.
